It is the resinous exudation or gum collected from the myrrh bush. The essential oil is obtained via steam distillation of the myrrh resin.
Therapeutic benefits:
- Antimicrobial properties : well known for its antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory actions. Can be used for bed sores, wounds and haemorrhoids.
- Digestive system : reputed to stimulate the stomach and digestive system and is useful for diarrhoea, dyspepsia and loss of appetite.
- Integumentary system : beneficial for chronic wounds and ulcers due to its antiseptic, astringent, anti-inflammatory and antiphlogistic properties. It is also beneficial for mature skin, wounds that are slow to heal, for weeping eczema and athlete's foot, cracked and chapped skin.
- Nervous system : promotes calm and tranquillity on the mind.
- Respiratory system : an excellent expectorant and as such is beneficial for coughs, bronchitis and colds.
- Reproductive system : a uterine stimulant and promotes menstruation thus relieving painful periods.
How to use:
For massage : Mix 3 to 4 drops of essential oils with 3 tablespoonful of carrier oil.
For bath : Drip about 6 to 8 drops of essential oils into bathtub filled with warm water and add 2 tablespoonful of carrier oil.
For vaporisation : Add 6 to 8 drops of essential oils into a tea-light candle burner or electric burner. For tea-light candle burner, do add water.
Cautions : Do not use during pregnancy.
