A perennial vine climbing to about 5m. The inflorescence is a spike of about 20 to 30 sessile flowers which develop into sessile fruits. Black peppers are produced from the unripe fruits on the harvested spikes. The essential oil is obtained via steam distillation of the dried, crushed but not quite ripe fruits.
Therapeutic benefits:
- Digestive system : its stomachic and carminative properties make it an excellent choice for aotnic dyspepsia, constipation, flatulence and loss of appetite.
- Circulatory system : is recommended for anaemia as a stimulant of the spleen and for bruises. It is also useful for chilblains.
- Musculoskeletal system : recommended in a massage blend for relief of rheumatism and arthritis, muscular pains and aches, tired and aching limbs and muscular stiffness.
How to use:
For massage : Mix 3 to 4 drops of essential oils with 3 tablespoonful of carrier oil.
For bath : Mix about 6 to 8 drops of essential oils with 2 tablespoonful of carrier oil or epsom salt and add the mixture into bathtub filled with warm water. Do not soak for more than 15 minutes.
For vaporisation : Add 6 to 8 drops of essential oils into a tea-light candle burner or electric burner. For tea-light candle burner, do add water.
